良く晴れた日に、目を瞑ったまま太陽の方向に顔を向けると、視界が赤一色に染まる体験をすることができます。太陽光が瞼の毛細血管を透かして、あのように見えるということなのですが、あまりにも鮮やかな上に、無限に続くような奥行きがあるので、暫くそのまま赤に満ちた世界に身を委ねてみることがあります。赤い色以外は何も見えない世界。瞼越しに明るさを感じているので、あれを闇とは言わないのかもしれませんが、たった一つだけの色に包まれた状態は、闇と同じに思えるのです。
夕方には、空は壮大なな色の変化を見せてくれます。オレンジ、ピンク、燃え上がるような赤へと。そして夜。私たちが感じている「闇」というものが、本当は黒に感じるほど深い「赤」である、という可能性はないのでしょうか。夜が深い赤に支配されているのだとしたら、昼から夜へ移り行く時間の、鮮やかなピンクとオレンジにも納得することができるのです。

On a clear day, if you turn your face in the direction of the sun with your eyes closed, you can experience the color red in your field of vision. The sunlight penetrates the capillaries of my eyelids and makes them appear that way. A world where nothing can be seen except the color red. I may not call it darkness because I feel brightness through my eyelids, but the state of being surrounded by only one color seems the same as darkness.
In the evening, the sky shows us spectacular changes of color. Orange, pink, to flaming red. And then night. Is it possible that the “darkness” we perceive is really a red so deep that it feels like black? If night is dominated by deep red, then it would make sense for the bright pinks and oranges of the transition from day to night.
